We had an excellent experience working with Todd and his team for the remodeling of our Clintonville kitchen. We interviewed several contractors and Todd stood out to us as the most knowledgeable on our type of home as well as the most creative. Our kitchen is fairly small, but Todd came up with great ideas to make the best use of the space. He didn’t hesitate in making recommendations rather than simply offering to do whatever we asked which is what we found other contractors did. For example we wanted to build a breakfast bar and lay tile for the floor. Todd pointed out that the rest of our first floor was hardwood and that we should just carry it through to the kitchen and that a breakfast bar would never fit instead recommending a beverage center which is now our favorite part of the kitchen.

Another differentiator we found between Todd and other contractors was that Todd was very helpful in pointing out potential surprises along the way (ex. Outdated wiring, plumbing, etc.) that others didn’t mention. Once the project started Todd and his team did an excellent job staying on schedule despite running into a few delays beyond their control. Rather than simply not working they found other things to work on to stay on schedule.

Todd was also very helpful in recommending great people to work with for materials like tile, counter tops, and cabinets. Their attention to detail was incredible as well. They noticed and corrected issues along the way before we ever noticed.

After the project was completed we had a few things come up and Todd was quick to get back out and address them. Knowing that whoever we hired would be responsible for a major renovation and would be in our home everyday for several weeks weighed heavy on us, but we cannot be more happy about our decision to hire Todd and his team.

Our only regret was not calling them sooner. They’re extremely busy and before we signed a contract with them they told us they wouldnt be able to start for several months because of all the projects they had lined up ahead of ours. Don’t make the same mistake we did – call them several months before you’re ready to start. Todd and his team were extremely professional from start to finish and exhibited the expertise we wanted from a company we would be hiring for such a major renovation. We will absolutely work with them again for other renovations in the future and have already and will continue recommending them to friends and family……..

I recently had my kitchen completely gutted and replaced and it was honestly a fantastic experience. (I know!) I would recommend Renaissance to anyone. My house is close to 100 years old and I was worried about all of the potential “surprises” lurking. Todd’s quote was all encompassing and the team was familiar with older homes. Working with Todd and his team was an absolutely amazing experience! I’ve heard so many horror stories regarding kitchen remodels and Renaissance made the process seamless and stress-free. Both Todd and his staff were extremely professional. As a new homeowner, I truly appreciated their honest, candid recommendations throughout the remodel. Todd accompanied me to all of my appointments, which made me more comfortable with the process. He also took care of all of the permits, etc. I loved not having to worry about all of the details. Also, both Todd and his staff were incredibly responsive. I don’t think I had to wait more than a few hours for an answer to a phone call or text message. The kitchen turned out more perfect than I could have imagined and ON TIME! What more can be said? …….. J Murphy of Clintonville

When was the last time a construction project went any where near the proposed finish time? That’s right never, or so we thought until we met Todd Smith with Renaissnace Inc. The House Whisperer. We did a kitchen expansion and changed the living room into a dining room. Todd forcasted the job to be complete in 6 weeks. It was finished 6 weeks to the day! His pricing was very fair for the scope of the project we had in mind. The kitchen and dining room look amazing. Todd was also able to match new hardwood floors to the existing hardwood floors. We moved a window, blew out a wall, changed a doorway, and redid the laundry room. It looks like something out of a magazine. You can pay more and the job will take longer, or you can call Todd to make your dream come true.

We have done 3 projects with Todd and his team, and have been very satisfied with the quality and price of their work. We did a facelift to our main bathroom, added a bathroom and finished a section in the basement, and did a complete gut (including removal of a wall) of our kitchen. Todd listened to our ideas, worked with us to help be sure we understand the implications of any grand changes to the plans. He was also open-minded to our ideas for modifications — I really appreciate that he focuses on the best solution for the homeowner, but also gives a realistic estimate of how such changes might impact the budget. When we hit snags or issues, he was very responsive and kept in communication with us to get the issue resolved. His pricing and timelines are fair and reasonable, and Todd respected our budgets for both time and money! We appreciated his extensive experience in the Clintonville area, as he gave excellent suggestions for elements that were appropriate updates without eliminating the charm of the era of our home (1930s). We would gladly work with him again in the future, and would recommend Renaissance Inc to others! –  Liz K Of Clintonville

We have a beautiful house thanks to Todd Smith and Renaissance. After a decade of suffering with a tiny, awkward, and ugly kitchen we called a number of contractors to talk about a major renovation. Several of them looked our 1920s Clintonville house and just never called us back. Some called us back and offered quotes that were 50% of the appraised value of the house. Some just proposed cursory remodels that would have left the basic structure (and ugliness) intact. We were about to give up on the whole thing when Todd came to provide an estimate. Instead of grimacing and wringing his hands, he marched around the house taking measurements, assuring us that he had worked with old walls, electricity, and plumbing before. Instead of sighing and trying to cajole us into diminished expectations, he envisioned an entirely new space. And instead of trying to persuade us to take out a bigger loan, he told us that he thought he could work within our budget.

Just about a week later we met with him to take a look at the plans that would demolish the kitchen and dining room, tear down the wall separating the two rooms, construct a new doorway, and entirely relocate all the mechanicals. Only a few weeks later, we were starting the project. There’s no doubt about it: a renovation project that guts the center of your house is a disruption, but Renaissance made it as painless as we could have hoped. We had never done any house remodeling projects before and were very anxious because everyone we knew eagerly told us about their personal disasters or the latest episode of “Holmes on Homes.” Our experience was absolutely different: Todd let us know when he anticipated problems and explained how he would manage them. He hires and uses very talented and conscientious subcontractors with whom he had done business for a long time. We never felt that he had abandoned us to nameless firms, subcontractors, and underlings. When he wasn’t pleased with the work the electricians did, he had them come back and fix it. When an ordered cabinet was too big, he replaced it. He was wonderful at communication: he was always available on email or phone when we had questions.

And perhaps best of all, he was imperturbable: discoveries about poor wiring or bad joists that sounded like disasters to us became “no worries” as Todd reassuringly said, “we’ll make it work.”

And make it work he did. Only 8 weeks later, we had a dream kitchen of cherry shaker cabinets, granite counters, and oak floors. What were once two tiny inconvenient rooms with no lights is now a gorgeous open center room that orchestrates the entire house. Renaissance crafted the original oak in our dining room and living room to blend seamlessly with the new oak in the kitchen. They saved doors and trim from the original built-ins and constructed built-in cabinets; so even though our house looks absolutely modern, it still has its 1920s craftsman style charm. Renaissance turned our drab and ugly space into a showcase: it is the most beautiful kitchen I have ever seen. If I thanked you a million times, it would be insufficient! – Beth H of Clintonville

Renaissance renovated our kitchen, including backsplash, island built out, countertops, painting cabinets, install hardwood floors on entire first floor; renovate fireplace; renovate wrap around porch including demo existing porch facade and installation and painting of columns; installation of french doors.
Todd and his staff were approachable, honest and reasonable. Todd and his team were a pleasure to work with an very timely in their work. It was a great experience and their craftsmanship was top notch. I would recommend them to anyone.

Renaissance updated our kitchen by removing a wall between the kitchen and dining room and opened up our kitchen to a wonderful new living space. Beautiful cabinets and granite countertops replaced our old oak cabinets and boring countertops. Todd and Jeremy were amazingly helpful at making recommendations without gouging us. Everything Todd said he was going to do, he did. Member Comments: Wonderful! Renaissance is the only way to go!!! I hope I hit the lottery and will invite them back to do more work!!! – Michele Mooney

I called the top 5 rated contractors on Angie’s List to provide an estimate for the above job (all contractor’s had all “A” ratings). All 5 came out and only Todd actually provided an estimate! The process went as well as one could expect – our goal was to have this complete by Thanksgiving, and Todd assured us that was not going to be an issue – most likely it was usual glitches (HH Gregg delivered wrong appliances, size of stove did not quite fit space, etc.) that caused the job to go right to the wire. Good news was that Todd and his team worked as hard as needed to be done, so the job was complete the day before Thanksgiving (wife had a few mild heart attacks). We are very pleased with all the work that Todd did. His subs are top notch – very professional, no issues at all leaving them at the house alone to complete their work. Would work with Renaissance again. Page Of Happiness Nominee – Mike Demuch

They were extremely good to work with. We were given updates on a weekly basis and Todd was very good at letting us know when there were delays. The job ended up costing more than budget, due to small allowances for fixtures and tile. The most impressive thing about them was how clean they were throughout the entire process. The house was always spotless and there were never signs of major work having been done, as they were so fastidious in cleaning up. This made the entire experience as good as remodeling can be.  – Mike Brittenback

Todd and everyone with Renaissance was very professional and knowledgeable during our basement remodel. They had helpful ideas for us during the planning process, they did very high quality work and the price was quite reasonable. Todd was always available to answer questions during the process, and Russ was easy to work with. Our job was pretty small compared to others (so they said!), but they gave us the attention of a much larger client! And we love our new basement — we’d recommend them to anyone considering a remodeling job of their own. – Dan & Angela Katona

Todd and his crew removed everything from the kitchen including the drywall on the walls and ceiling. I chose to do all of the painting and wood staining myself and did that at the appropriate times as the remodel progressed. The electrical was all redone, the telephone was moved, and plumbing was done for the new location for the cook top and to provide water to the ice maker in the new refrigerator. Todd and his main man, Russ, did a wonderful job installing the cabinets. They also had to work around several unforeseen challenges that inevitably crop up in remodeling jobs, unleveled ceilings, strangely located heating pipes, etc. The subcontractors that Todd uses for the electrical, plumbing, and drywall were all really nice people, did a fine job and I was comfortable having them in my home. Rhian, the tile lady who did the backsplash stone work was great and very helpful. Todd promised I would have a usable kitchen by Thanksgiving and I did. A great experience all around. – Ruth Ann Robbins

Todd and crew did an outstanding job, and our formerly scary bathroom is now absolutely stunning. We chose him in part because we were interested in preserving a somewhat historical feel in our 1920s home (with a modern edge), and really appreciated his sensitivity toward historical character. He worked with our vision and brought it to life. When the inevitable surprises came up in the construction process, Todd was quick to suggest changes and work-arounds that made the result as good as or even better than what we originally had in mind. He kept to his schedule, finishing in the 6-8 weeks he promised, which we particularly appreciated because our only alternative was a toilet and shower stall in the basement. His subcontractors are as competent and professional as he is; special kudos to Rhian the Tile Lady, whose work was spectacular. Everyone’s care and attention to detail is truly top-notch, and Todd was really great to work with. We definitely plan to call on him again. – Bill Lafayette

Working with Renaissance
was nothing short of a completely satisfying experience. I was taken aback by their professionalism, flexibility, desire to please and their promptness to follow up with all my needs and questions. In the end, I gained a beautifully finished basement and a business relationship that felt more like a friendship. – Holly Brewer

Todd, I would like to say that I am very glad that I looked for a contractor in the back of Angie’s List. That is where I found your ad. Through the estimate stage and throughout the process it has been a pleasure working with you and you team. You made our vision of what our bathroom should look like come to fruition. We are very pleased with the results and pleased with the courtesy you and your team showed our home. If you would be willing to work with us again, we would definitely look forward to working with you on our kitchen and many other rooms as we continue the restoration on our home. We will definitely recommend Renaissance Inc. to others, Bill has already done so. If you need pictures to put on your website please feel free to do so I can send some to you once the painting is done. Please use this letter as a reference if you wish. – Ron Templin

Todd built and installed a set of built-ins and custom finished our basement up to, but not including paint and flooring, this was our call service was available. Outcome was an additional 675 sq feet of terrific living space and a great pair of built-ins in our family room. My wife and I were looking for a contractor related to built-ins in our family room and finishing our basement. We are so happy we found Todd Smith. Todd was terrific to work with from the first time he stopped over concerning a preliminary discussion/estimate, all the way through completion and even follow up after the fact. The communication, professionalism, and willingness to listen as well as provide solid input around our ideas, all was appreciated. Todd was able to expand our ideas, due to his background and other work he had completed. This only added to our experience. The built-ins are terrific and the comments we’ve received from friends are all extremely positive. The basement is that much better. Todd worked with us and was available anytime a question came up. He offered great ideas, based on his experience and really was in tune with our overall vision. We had some concern, using someone we didn’t know, but couldn’t be happier with the outcome. – Scott & Janet Thompson
